1948-D Roosevelt Silver Dime, Vintage Anti-Semitic "JEW" Counterstamp, RARE. We offer for your consideration a seldom seen and never offered coin with historical significance. Little is known about the enigmatic "JEW" counterstamped Roosevelt dimes. Author, researcher and world renowned authority on counterstamped coinage, Gregory Brunk, opines on the intent behind these pieces in his 2014 work entitled Coins Countermarked with Political Messages and Related Pieces.
Here's an excerpt from Mr. Brunk's work on the subject under the heading "Anti-Big Government". A number of letters to editors of numismatic publications during the 1960s concerned. Roosevelt dimes that were stamped with individual letter punches. (Son of a Bitch) countermarks, which are seen on coins dated as late as 1965.
Reflect the intense dislike some people had for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. They called his New Deal the Jew Deal.
They believed his 1933 order that took the. And required gold coins be turned into banks for melting was part of a conspiracy to. Transfer the nations wealth to Jewish bankers.
It was suggested in numismatic. Publications that these coins might have been countermarked by a member of the. It was formed in the 1950s as an ultra-conservative, anticommunist and anti-big government organization that some see as the forerunner of. In any event, the source of these countermarks was never discovered.
Famed author and researcher Mel Wacks--the founding director of the Jewish-American Hall of Fame and past president of the American Israel Numismatic Association--has also provided his thoughts on this scarce counterstamp. Wacks, who is well known for his own counterstamped coinage, discovered a 1953 Roosevelt dime with the same "JEW" countermark and wrote an article for the March-June 2012 double issue of The Shekel.
In it he explores the anti-Semitic sentiment Franklin D. Roosevelt faced during his term as President of the United States (1933-45).
Anti-Semites were upset that President Roosevelt appointed many Jews to key cabinet positions, and others theorize that Roosevelt is of Jewish ancestry, hence his perceived favoritism towards Jewish-Americans. Ironically, President Roosevelt had a mixed record regarding European Jews during World War II. The piece offered here is the second that I have ever examined in person, and by far the finest of the few that are documented via photos. Wack's example is a low-grade 1953 example, and another that I examined years ago was also heavily circulated, although I do not recall the date of that piece. My theory is that most of these counterstamped coins were melted over the years.
As a coin dealer, I have often melted mangled and damaged silver coins in our regular refining of sterling silver flatware and such. Few dealers would understand the historical significance of such a piece and would be quick to melt it due to its hateful message. It is safe to say that all of the JEW counterstamped Roosevelt dimes emanated from one source based on the fact that the three letter punches are identical on the few extant examples seen. You will receive the exact coin shown in the photos.
